Nestling on the Suffolk-Cambridgeshire border at the gateway to the East of England, Newmarket is both the historical home and the current powerhouse of British horse racing.
The town has a unique environment consisting of the world's most extensive training grounds (situated on the world's largest expanse of tended grassland), over 2500 racehorses, some 70 licensed trainers and more than 60 stud farms where the racehorses of the future are bred. It was the original home of the Jockey Club, remains the headquarters of many national and international racing organisations and boasts two totally separate, dynamic and contrasting racecourses where some of the world's best flat racing takes place each year.
It was at Newmarket that Britain's first race was run under written rules more than three centuries ago; where Charles II, who spent much of his life living with his Court in the town, rode his own horse to victory in a race; and where countless champions of the turf have dazzled racegoers from all over the world with their speed, brilliance and majesty.
Today Newmarket is thriving, with the modern and imposing NatWest Rowley Mile Racecourse, the true "Course of Champions", boasting world class racing and facilities and the stunningly picturesque July Course offering its own unique brand of entertainment over the summer months.
