It was announced on 27 February 2013 that Gough Hotels has agreed to purchase from current owners Stephen and Antonia Bournes Southwold Pier. The existing business includes gift shops, cafes, a restaurant, arcade and planning permission to replace the pavillion with a luxury Art Deco-style hotel. The Pier Pavillion dates back from 1937 and planning permission was obtained in 2010.

Managing Director of Gough Hotels Limited, Robert Gough said "Stephen and Antonia will be a hard act to follow, but we are confident we can build on the success of the Pier, and in time develop the luxury hotel which will transform the business into a 365 day a year enterprise. This will not only boost the Pier's shops and restaurants, but increase employment and the appeal of the town as a year round tourist destination."

Managing Director Robert Gough said "To be able to build a hotel in Southwold is an amazing opportunity, as is being able to build a hotel on a pier and was a key reason for the purchase."

"I have always considered Southwold to be the most iconic place on the East Coast of England with other fantastic businesses and we see it as a great opportunity to expand our business. We are delighted to get involved in such a wonderful town."

Gough Hotels is a family run business and has owned The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds since 1973 and building from new The Salthouse Harbour Hotel on Ipswich Waterfront in 2003.
